Couples Therapy
Relationships can become strained by conflict, disconnection, change, or patterns that are difficult to understand and even harder to change. Couples therapy creates space to slow those patterns down, understand what is happening between you, and develop new ways of relating. At STX Therapy, the work is collaborative, evidence-based, and responsive to the relationship you are actually living—not an ideal of what a relationship is supposed to be.
Available in person in San Antonio and virtually for eligible clients throughout Texas.
How Couples Therapy Can Help
Relationships are shaped by patterns—how partners communicate, respond to stress, navigate difference, repair hurt, and stay connected through change. Couples therapy helps make those patterns more visible so you can better understand what is happening between you and develop more intentional ways of relating.
-
Explore how you communicate, respond, and make sense of one another—especially during moments of stress, conflict, or disconnection. Together, we identify patterns that may be getting in the way of feeling heard and understood.
-
Work through experiences that have created hurt, distance, or uncertainty while developing a clearer understanding of what each partner needs to experience greater trust and emotional safety.
-
Understand what happens beneath recurring conflict and develop more constructive ways to respond to disagreement, difference, and emotional intensity.
-
Explore what creates closeness, distance, and connection in your relationship while developing more intentional ways of relating to one another over time.
Is Couples Therapy Right for You?
Couples therapy can be helpful whether your relationship is in crisis, going through a period of change, or simply asking something different of you than it once did. Some couples come to therapy because communication has become difficult or trust has been disrupted. Others want to better understand recurring patterns, navigate an important transition, reconnect, or gain clarity about what comes next.
You do not need to wait until the relationship feels unmanageable. Therapy can create space to understand what is happening between you before patterns become more deeply established.
✓ Communication feels difficult or disconnected
✓ The same conflicts or patterns keep returning
✓ Trust or emotional safety has been disrupted
✓ You’re navigating a significant transition or change
✓ You want to better understand your relationship
✓ You’re seeking clarity about what comes next
Your first appointment is an opportunity to begin understanding what is happening in your relationship—not to assign blame or decide who is right. Together, we'll explore what brings you to therapy, learn about your relationship history, identify strengths and recurring patterns, and begin clarifying what each of you needs from the process. Every relationship is unique, so therapy is shaped around your circumstances and what emerges through the work.
What to Expect During Your First Appointment
1. Understanding Your Relationship
We'll discuss what brings you to therapy, what each of you is experiencing, and what you hope to better understand or change.
2. Exploring Your Story
We'll explore your relationship history, important experiences, strengths, and patterns that may help us understand what is happening now.
3. Clarifying What Matters
